Poem 2-Reaction to Occurrences in the Senate

My muse moves me, O senators,

Why must we argue and debate so?

Both powers have formed his own sturdy decision

And neither will diverge from his chose path.

Stubborn is the mind, and stupid is the fool who thinks that the mind of these men is malleable.

For the Sun will rise and set again with the coming of each new day;

For he having been struck by Cupid's arrow will pursue the lust of the stricken.

This (alas!) their minds have been made.

Though you can fight, and do fight, both extreme sides valiantly

I, Catullus, has yet to be persuaded by any save you, Libo.

This man speaks with a steady mind having not been blinded by the occurrences if the past hours.

Libo, I applaud you.

For no man who was a Roman leader deserves a criminal's fate.

For no man who disobeyed the rules of the state deserves an elaborate celebration.

But in truth all men deserve respect in the final stage of life.
