Quirites,
Our consul Gaius Julius Caesar, censor & dictator for life, was murdered today during the Senate's meeting in the Hall of Pompey. He was ambushed by several men holding daggers and received multiple brutal wounds before expiring. He was 56 years old.
For more information on the assassination, read the accounts of Suetonius and Plutarch (Readings, pp. 15-19).
The conspirators have identified themselves as Liberators of the Republic. It is still unclear whether this is an isolated strike or the first of many murders. If you feel that your life may be threatened, consider staying at home or hiring bodyguards.
The Senate will meet to deliberate on Caesar's funeral this Wednesday and Friday.
